The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup is primarily the forerunner to the UEFA. This was founded on the 18th April way back in the year 1955. Notable among them has to be Barcelona and their team who won the Cup thrice in a row. Then there was Valencia CF who had won the cup twice. The year 1968 saw Leeds United AFC to acquire the status of becoming the first ever team from the northern European club to win the trophy which almost heralded its popularity.

Live UEFA Cup also went through a name change and the fifth of these matches was held in 1971-72. This tournament was won by the soccer team from Tottenham Hotspur FC. This was also the first tournament to be called the UEFA Cup. The change of name manifested the fact that this prestigious soccer event was now completely run by the UEFA. The change in name also showed that the tournament was no more associated with the trade fairs. During 1970s German, Swedish, Dutch and Belgian began competing with the British. Something different happened between the period of 1968 and 1984 as only one single team from the southern side namely Juventus succeeded in breaking off the sheer dominance of the Europeans from the north in 1977.
